Automotive electrical systems have changed greatly over the years. Here a Drake Auto we have the equipment and expertise to properly diagnose your car’s electrical system.

Many years ago cars were equipped with a 6 volt battery and a positive ground. Now on modern cars we use the negative battery side for ground and the systems have changed to 12 volts. Many of your car’s systems are run on fiber optics or ethernet type networks. This has decreased the weight of the car since the fiber optics are lighter than traditional copper wiring.

We use a system now called CAN for controller area network. The CAN systems also has different speeds. A slow speed for things like seat memory and sunroof operation and a faster network for things like throttle and fuel injectors.

There are still many traditional 12 volt items on a car like light bulbs for instance. Even light bulbs have changed though.
